Std # 2–1: Use words that create clarity, precision, and vivid description
  • Action verbs, not linking verbs

  • Specific terms, not general or vague

  • Clear, precise, vivid language

  • NOTE: Language to avoid includes, but is not limited to, overused, clichéd words, superfluous verbiage, redundancy, and jargon.


Lesson Plans:

B) Using lists provided by the teacher, students highlight action and linking verbs in a newspaper article or other written materials.  The verbs may be color-coded according to function. 
(I, T) Students draw a picture according to a description written and read by a partner.  Then, using  only the picture, students write the description again. Students may also draw according to a description from a text prepared by the teacher.

Lesson aims to develop and broaden knowledge of descriptive character adjective vocabulary

Describing Vocabulary
(I, T) Lesson aims to improve vocabulary skills when speaking about the cinema, films, and movies while applying descriptive adjectives

Adjective Clauses
(I, T) Adjective clauses and relative pronouns are explained including examples followed by two online self-checking activities

Building Character Adjectives Vocabulary
(I, T) Lesson employs a fun questionnaire to focus on developing personal description vocabulary. Students can practice conversation skills while also focusing on improving their command of refined character description. This first phase is then followed by a vocabulary development exercise sheet.
