Std # 4–4: Demonstrate the ability to locate information in reference material
  • Comprehend information in reference materials

  • Locate information and comprehend: dictionary, glossary, index, table of contents, appendix, atlas, almanac, and encyclopedia
    NOTE: Reference materials may include glossaries; dictionaries; indexes; table of contents; appendixes; and research sources such as atlases, almanacs, encyclopedias, reader’s guides, and both print-based and electronic card catalogs (print-based card catalogs are not on the graduation exam)


Lesson Plans:

ESL Ideas      (B=Beginning, I=Intermediate, T=Transitional)
(I, T)
Students visit the library and the Internet to locate sources for words, facts, places and new information.
(I, T) Students locate a publication and copy on a note card the correct bibliographical information or URL for that source.  Students may also access this information through the library’s catalogue software.
(B, I, T)  Students participate in a teacher-created library “scavenger hunt” requiring simple answers from a variety of sources within the library. 

Focusing on Dictionary Use
(I, T) Lesson / Activity focuses on understanding students' approach to using a dictionary

(B, I, T) Excellent online dictionary and thesaurus including definitions, word function, and pronunciation with sound files

Online Reference Materials
(B, I, T) Contains links to explore educational web resources including: online reference tools for children, dictionaries, encyclopedia, dictionaries, conversion and translation tools, almanac, calendars, maps, atlas
