Home for Every Culture
In this
lesson students will identify the words that became part of the English
language as a result of immigrant groups settling in America. They
will also be able to identify the origin of music and instruments from a
variety of ethnic backgrounds.
Cognate Detectives
In this lesson students will learn that there are words in English and
Spanish that share the same root. These words are visibly and audibly
very similar and have the same meaning. Students will
become detectives exploring the many cognates in Spanish and English
Electronic Journals about Latin American Folktales
This lesson combines technology and research using authentic
student-to-student dialog about folktales from their countries.
Folklore genre provides the context through which students will
learn more about Latin American countries. Teachers will need to
subscribe to an Internet discussion list intended for teachers
seeking classroom partners for an intercultural email project.
A Discourse on the History of Language: Understanding the Origins of
and Connections Among Modern Languages
In this lesson, students analyze the information used by linguists to
construct the evolution of languages. They then research different
dating techniques to understand how scientists infer age with evidence.
Animal Spirit and Powers (Nahuales)
In this
lesson, students select a nahual and then write and illustrate bilingual
poems about their chosen animal spirit. The lesson teaches basic
elements of poetic verse in Spanish and English (sensory use, imagery,
stanza, poetic line). A variety of Spanish and English poems are read
and discussed to help students garner ideas for using sensory images,
similes, and metaphors in their writing.
