The object of this lesson is for students
to become acquainted with the work of a muralist, to identify components of a mural, to compare and contrast murals, and to create their own personal "mural".

Guantanamera: A Poem and a Song
In this lesson students will listen to and discuss the song "Guantanamera;" and compare revolutionary activities of Jose Marti and Pete Seeger.

The Island of the Blue Dolphins

Cocina Mexicana
This lesson plan designed to increase students' Spanish vocabulary through a study of Mexican cuisine. Students will use the Internet to research recipes, discuss the foodstuffs and utensils in a mystery box.

Different Ethnic Groups in Ecuador, Panama and Argentina: Their Assimilation and their Contributions
This is a lesson plan which is an introduction to the geography of Latin America. Using a variety of research methods as well as the Internet and key pals, students are introduced to the countries of Latin America.

Borders Within: Social Interaction on the Border
Students will analyze social interaction, racism, and prejudice on the border through exploration of their own experiences.

Creating a Spanish Literature Book
Students will create a Spanish literature book to better understand stories taught in  the AP Spanish Literature course.  The authors of the stories they will depict in a construction book  will be : Federico Garcia Lorca, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jorge Luis Borges, Ana Maria Matute, and Miguel de Unamuno.

The Mayans
This is an interdisciplinary unit which will explore why the Mayan are not as prominent today as they were in the past. Students will also develop a better understanding of Mayan culture and their civilization.

Building Communities/Construyendo Comunidades
The objective of the lesson is to allow students to take responsibility for their own learning of a foreign language through exploring the theme of what community means. All groups develop their own core vocabulary of words associated with their concept of community. For the Grade and Middle School students the lessons should be kept at a concrete-operation cognitive level. For High School students their theme remains the same, but their development is more on the abstract cognitive level.

Spanish Cultures
The object of this lesson is to create a Mexican dinner menu on the computer, and to compare and contrast the Spanish culture with American culture.

Traditions of Spain
In this lesson, Traditions of Spain, students will gain knowledge of Spanish customs. The students will be able to compare this with that of the United States customs.

Cultural Capital: Examining How Immigrant Groups Adjust to American Society
In this lesson, students research the adaptation and acculturation of immigrant groups in the United States. They then create “culture capsules” aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of new peoples in American society.

The Roots of American Culture
In this lesson, students first explore the notion of culture and the influence of Latino culture on the U.S. Students then work in small groups to identify ways that Latino and non-Latino U.S. cultures have engaged in cultural 'cross-fertilization.

I Hear Latin America Singing
In this lesson, students learn about the historical and current social, political, and cultural trends of Latin American countries. After researching a specific country, groups write songs that reflect the music styles as well as the history of the region.

Aztecs Meet the Spanish
This assignment will challenge all levels of Spanish It involves the use of a variety of maps and documents.  Students will also need to use their analytical skills.

El Sabor del Caribe/A Taste of the Caribbean
This lesson is designed for Spanish II or higher levels of Spanish, and it involves an analysis of the symbolism of food in the oral and written literature of the Caribbean.

Cinderella Folk Tales: Variations in Character
This lesson will teach the changes the Cinderella story undergoes when it is translated from one culture to another; and the things that remain the same transcending all cultures.

Cinderella Folk Tales: Variations in Plot and Setting
This lesson will answer the following questions: How do the plot and setting of Cinderella change as it is translated into a different culture? What literary elements of the Cinderella story are universal?

America, A Home for Every Culture
Through teacher-guided discussion and hands-on activities, students will explore how various cultures have contributed to making the United States the unique and diverse country that it is today.
