French II
Std.  4.1
Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the French language and English.

Lesson Plans:

Creating a Rhyming Book - Bonsoir Lune
The book Goodnight Moon rhymes in English but not in the translation Bonsoir Lune . Students will make a "Goodnight" book in French that rhymes!

Experiencing Life in the Middle Ages
In this unit, groups of students research topics from the Middle Ages. Each group presents its findings to the class. Students learn new vocabulary and historical information. They review and practice vocabulary related to families, preferences, houses, occupations, and hobbies.

Le Carrefour Culturel
What is American? What is French? The attempt to find a simple definition of either culture is impossible. In this scenario, students develop an understanding of the effects of French colonialism on Africa and/or the Caribbean as well as the concept of Négritude, an expression of the cultural crossroads (carrefour culturel) experienced by those of the former French colonies.

Resources:

Online French-English Dictionary

How French has Influenced English:  The English language has been shaped by a number of other languages over the centuries, and many English speakers know that Latin and German were two of the most important. What many people don't realize is how much the French language has influenced English.

Poetry Projects:  Create an Foreign language stock of beautiful poems and literary excerpts to create a mood and examples of a form to share with your FL exchange group. Let your students all try their hand at translating a poem from the FL to English, then compare results.

Up With Proficiency! Down With Anxiety!  This program encourages students to communicate meaningfully and effectively in French.
