Summer Shorts
Students use sequence maps to create personal narratives about their summer vacations

Persuasive Writing
Students learn how to use persuasive writing in commercials and in formal essays

Hearwaves
Students analyze the content, language, style, advertising and music of a radio station to ascertain the audience it is targeting

The Scarlet Letter
Students write facts they know about the character from their reading the novel

Outside the box
Students produce an e-story

From Zero to Superhero
Students examine the characterization of superheroes in literature and develop superheroes of their own

Whale of a lesson
Uses information about 19th century life to enable students to understand Moby Dick and produce imitative journals

Writing about the Total Effect
This lesson about Julius Caesar shows how Shakespeare
succeeds in leaving a great emotional impact on readers through orchestrating all the key literary elements, such as, plot, setting, point of view, tone, theme, symbol, and irony

Read On--Experiences with Literature that Has Changed Us
After creating and sharing individual timelines of their own histories as readers, students write an essay on a chosen book


Perspective on the Slave Narrative
This lesson plan introduces students to one of the most widely-read genres of 19th-century American literature and an important influence within the African American literary tradition even today

An Analysis of Literary Devices Used by Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X
Students are exposed to Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" and Malcolm X's "The Ballot or the Bullet." After reading and analyzing the speeches, students will create their own persuasive speeches utilizing some of the same devices as King and Malcolm X.


Like the Back of My Hand
The purpose of this exercise is to introduce students to writing for fun.

Persuading an Audience: Writing Effective Letters to the Editor
Students write a persuasive letter to the editor of a newspaper, focusing on a current local or national issue and requesting a specific action or response from readers.
