Std # II-1: Use words that create clarity, precision, and vivid description

    NOTE: Language to avoid includes, but is not limited to, overused, clichéd words, superfluous verbiage, redundancy, and jargon


Lesson Plans:

Hearwaves
Students analyze the content, language, style, advertising and music of a radio station to ascertain the audience it is targeting

Like the Back of My Hand
Students create a map of their hands using descriptive phrases

Suggestions for English Language Learners:                   

ESL Ideas      (B=Beginning, I=Intermediate, T=Transitional)
(
B) Using lists provided by the teacher, students highlight action and linking verbs in a newspaper article or other written materials.  The verbs may be color-coded according to function. 
(I, T) Students draw a picture according to a description written and read by a partner.  Then, using  only the picture, students write the description again. Students may also draw according to a description from a text prepared by the teacher.
