Std # 4.42: Demonstrate the ability to locate information in reference material and comprehend information in reference materials

NOTE: Reference materials may include glossaries; dictionaries; indexes; table of contents; appendixes; and research sources such as atlases, almanacs, encyclopedias, reader’s guides, and both print-based and electronic card catalogs (available electronic versions of reference materials must be used)

  • Additional Content to be taught--Addendum:

    • (1) Identify major historical developments of language and literature in America from 1900 to the present
      Examples: relationships to place and time and changes in American lexicon as a result of the Industrial Revolution: chronology, genre, style

    • (2) Evaluating author technique

NoodleTools  Interactive tools designed to aid students with their online research, including search strategies and bibliographic citations

Internet Public Library  17,000 online titles that can be browsed by author, by title, or by Dewey Decimal Classification

Quotations Clarified (Writing about Quotes)  Students write a quote, questions raised by the quotation, and a response to the questions

Suggestions for English Language Learners:

Students visit the library and the Internet to locate sources for words, facts, places and new information.
(I, T) Students locate a publication and copy on a note card the correct bibliographical information or URL for that source.  Students may also access this information through the library’s catalogue software.
(B, I, T)  Students participate in a teacher-created library “scavenger hunt” requiring simple answers from a variety of sources within the library.
