Grade 2, Language Arts
Language Mechanics:
Distinguish correct punctuation - period, question mark, exclamation mark, apostrophe (contractions/ possessives), and comma (items in a series)

Lesson Plans:

Contractions:  High Flying Apostrophes
This is a fun and active way for students to grasp an understanding of contractions.

Daily Edit Sentences/ Journal Writing
Students are given sentences to edit, fixing changes in punctuation and grammar.

Tuning into Breakfast
The students will identify long vowel sounds, contractions, and compound words found in the words of a breakfast song. This lesson can be used to teach health, nutrition, or food-related topics.

Resources:

Punctuation Paintball:  Choose the easy level to work on capitalization and punctuation (period, question mark and exclamation mark).  The medium level adds commas.  It asks you to register for free, but you can click "maybe later" and skip that step.

Making Sentences Games:  Game number 3 has students add punctuation to sentences.

Power Proofreading:  Cute interactive practice for different types of language arts skills.

Suggestions for English Language Learners:
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B) Students copy sentences from a poem or other pre-printed text.
(D) Students correct conventional mechanics in journal writing such as punctuation by checking for periods, exclamation marks, question marks, apostrophes with contractions and possessives.
