This is a fun and active way for students to grasp an understanding of
contractions.
Daily
Edit Sentences/ Journal Writing
Students are given sentences to edit, fixing changes in punctuation
and grammar.
Tuning into Breakfast
The students will identify long vowel sounds, contractions, and
compound words found in the words of a breakfast song. This lesson can
be used to teach health, nutrition, or food-related topics.

Paintball: Choose the easy level to work on capitalization
and punctuation (period, question mark and exclamation mark).
The medium level adds commas. It asks you to register for free,
but you can click "maybe later" and skip that step.
Making Sentences Games: Game number 3 has students add
punctuation to sentences.
Power Proofreading: Cute interactive practice for
different types of language arts skills.
Suggestions for English Language Learners:
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)
(E/B) Students copy sentences
from a poem or other pre-printed text.
(D) Students correct conventional mechanics in journal
writing such as punctuation by checking for periods, exclamation
marks, question marks, apostrophes with contractions and
possessives.
