Language Expression: Determine purpose for writing (COS 17, 20/ SAT10)

Lesson Plans:

Poetry Cubes
This lesson can be used during holidays, seasons, or themes to show how diverse and exciting poetry can be.

Narrowing the Focus:  What's the Main Event?
In the lesson, students will learn how to narrow the focus of their personal narrative down to one main event by selecting a more specific title.

Idea Generator
This read aloud activity helps generate ideas for writing.

It's Okay to be Different
This lesson uses Todd Parr's picture book It's Okay to Be Different to help students understand what diversity means and how it applies to them. After a shared reading of the text, students work in small groups to discuss and write down what makes them diverse. They then visit Todd Parr's website and create pages for their own books about diversity.

Resources:

Kids' Space:  This is an international forum for kids to share writing and communicate with children from other places.

Noodles:  This is a cute site that shows how a pop-up book is made.  You can print out the pattern and have your students create their own books.
