Language Expression:
Determine an appropriate topic sentence (COS 17, 20)

Lesson Plans:

How to Write a Paragraph
This is a five week set of lessons devoted to paragraph writing.

Writing Around the World
In this lesson, students will work cooperatively to write a paragraph with a topic sentence and four detail sentences.

Get Writing With "Weekend News!"
Each Monday, students are asked to write about their weekend. They apply what they already know about writing and what has been taught to them through minilessons. They can use temporary or invented spelling for words they do not know how to spell, but should correctly spell words that they know.

Resources:

Writer's Block:  This activity gives students a topic that they write about.  Their responses are posted for other children to see.  It would be very useful in showing kids the importance of an appropriate topic sentence.

The TEAMS Writing Process:  Students progress through "brainstorming," a story web, and a rough draft to the final product. You can watch all of the video or just the segment on topic sentences.  This is hosted on Discovery Education unitedstreaming, and to access it you must have your user name and password.  All teachers in Alabama can get this information from their school's media specialist or technology support teacher.

Suggestions for English Language Learners:
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B) Let students work with a buddy to do their writing together. The buddy can write down what they say.
(E/B, D) Allow students to draw a picture, only write a word or two, or write some words in their native language.
(E/B, D, E) Have students use a topic from a teacher-led map of ideas for prewriting, or their own writing map/graphic organizer.
(D, E) Let students work with a buddy to do their writing together.
