Grade 3, Language Arts
Language Mechanics: Identify correctly applied grammar - nouns, pronouns, verbs (action/ being), subject-verb agreement (simple subject), adjectives, adverbs, and appropriate tenses (past/ present/ future) (COS 21/ SAT10)

Lesson Plans:

Dynamic Diamante Poetry
In this lesson, students review nouns, adjectives, and verbs and learn about gerunds. They then practice using them as new vocabulary words by composing structured diamante poems as a class and independently using an online interactive tool.

Be the Sentence- An Interactive Language Arts Activity
Students take on the roles of different words and punctuation and work collaboratively to create a complete sentence using correct parts of speech, word order, and punctuation. Students progress from simple sentences to more complex sentences.

Verb Tense Time Warps
When students have inconsistent verb tense, they have a "time warp" in their stories. In this lesson, students learn that verbs tell not only what action takes place, but also when the action takes place. They will learn to identify past, present and future verb tenses and to check sentences and paragraphs for inconsistent verb tense.

Delicious, Tasty, Yummy:  Enriching Writing with Adjectives and Synonyms
This lesson teaches students what adjectives are and then uses a webbing strategy to help them develop lists of adjectives and their synonyms. Students' vocabulary is expanded and their writing is enriched when they are encouraged to use a variety of adjectives so that readers can "see, taste, and feel" what they write.

A Sneaky Poem
Using poetry to share their ideas, students incorporate a subject and its synonym, and the parts of speech to create a Sneaky Poem.

Pen Pal Letters to Soldiers Overseas
Students write letters to soldiers overseas with correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.

Perky Plurals
The students learn how to form the plurals of words by adding -s, -es, changing the y to i and adding -es, changing the f or fe to v and adding -es, and some irregular cases. The children then use this knowledge to play a station activity game

Resources:

Sentence Puzzles:  Choose the skill you want to work on and play the game.  It asks you to register for free, but you can click "maybe later" and skip that step.

The Grammar Gorillas:  Our friends, the Grammar Gorillas, need help identifying parts of speech. If you click on the right word in the sentence, our friends get a banana. And you know, a gorilla with a banana is a gorilla with appeal.

2B or Nottoobee:  2Bee and Queen Nottoobee need flowers to make honey. Help them find flowers by choosing the correct verb to complete the sentences.

SchoolHouse Rock Lyrics:  This page gives the lyrics to the GrammarRock songs.

Suggestions for English Language Learners:
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B) Students copy writing off the board for practice.
(D, E)
Students keep a writing log in which teachers create sentences that contain incorrect grammar (i.e. subject-verb agreement) that students self-correct or work in small groups to correct.
