Language Expression: Determine an appropriate topic sentence (COS 20, 25/ SAT10)

Lesson Plans:

Action Chains
Students learn to elaborate on an event in a narrative by expanding their sentences into action chains.  Expanding single actions into an action chains provides the reader with a more detailed picture of an event in a narrative.

Little Bit?  BIG BIT?  Little Bit
This lesson helps students who tend to jump right in and tell their entire story in the first few sentences and then struggle to complete their story.  Students will learn to start and end their stories with just a "Little Bit" about the setup and closure of the story.

The Newspaper
Students will study types of newspaper stories and how opening paragraphs are constructed, as well as identifying cause and effect in articles.

Resources:

Writer's Block:  This activity gives students a topic that they write about.  Their responses are posted for other children to see.  It would be very useful in showing kids the importance of an appropriate topic sentence.
