Language Mechanics: Distinguish correct capitalization - the first word of sentences, proper nouns (titles of people/ months of the year/ days of the week/ book titles/ works of art), the first word of quotations, and necessary parts of a letter (COS 26, SAT10)

Lesson Plans:

The Mail Race
Students write friendly letters, mail them to random schools, and wait to see who responds.  This lesson combines language arts and geography.

Capitalize in the Letter
Students write a letter to a friend, and the friend adds the capital letters.

Excellent Editors
After reviewing rules for capital letters and punctuation, students will locate examples from their books they have read. They will then use those sentences to create a worksheet for another group to edit and exchange papers.

(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B, D) Students manipulate word cards to create sentences and correct capitalization.
(D, E) Students keep a writing log in which teachers create sentences that are incorrect that students self-correct or work in small groups/partners to correct.
