abbreviations (COS 26)

Lesson Plans:

Audience, Purpose, and Language Use in Electronic Messages
This lesson explores the language of electronic messages and how it affects other writing. Furthermore, it explores the freedom and creativity for using Internet abbreviations for specific purposes and examines the importance of a more formal style of writing based on audience.

Abbreviations and Acronyms
This lesson will help students understand the purpose and meaning of common abbreviations and acronyms in a newspaper.

Pendemonium: The Posse in Australia
This is a lesson plan to accompany the video Pendemonium: The Posse in Australia.  It utilizes abbreviations as students write letters to their partners.

Where Do Words Come From?
Students will use dictionaries to discover the English word origins.  Learning abbreviations is a must to complete this activity.  While it is geared for older students, it could prove an intriguing challenge for advanced fifth graders.

Common Abbreviations

Suggestions for English Language Learners:
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B) Students practice with picture-word cards that have the picture and word on one side of the card (i.e. Maple Street) and the abbreviation on the other (i.e. Maple St.). After time to study the abbreviations, have a buddy hold up the picture/word card and have the student write down or say the abbreviation.
(D, E)
Students keep a writing log in which teachers create sentences that are incorrect that students self-correct or work in small groups/partners to correct.
