Language Expression: Identify correctly and effectively written sentences
(COS 20, 26, 30, 31/ SAT10)

Lesson Plans:

Pondering the Parts of Speech
Students will analyze sentences in terms of length, type, structure, and style.

My Thoughts Completely
This lesson addresses writing simple sentences and avoiding sentence fragments.

Happiness is a Warm Puppy
Students will use critical thinking skills to write a book from a dog's point of view.

Speak No Evil
What's up? Oh, yes, that's just the expression. If your students have no idea of what to say, this lesson will offer a fun way to explore all the possibilities in a world of communication!
While this lesson does not focus on the correctly written sentences, it might be helpful in identifying appropriate use of language.

Successful Paragraphs
This activity guides students through the writing process for a successful five-sentence paragraph with varied sentence beginnings. Repeating this process frequently with many, varied topics teaches students to use variety to create interesting paragraphs.

Resources:

Sentence Sense:  What makes a sentence work?  Here's what you need to know.

Common Errors in English:  This is a good resource for any question about word usage.

Sentence Structure Quiz:  Interactive game that reviews types of sentences.

Suggestions for English Language Learners:
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B, D, E) Students are paired with native English speakers to proof read and discuss writing.
(D, E) Students keep a writing log for which the teacher provides sentences that are incorrect which students then correct independently or with peers. (See www.greatsource.com for daily correction exercise resources.)
(D,
E) See also Sentence Auction Activity Lesson for sentence correction practice.
