Kindergarten, Language Arts Language Mechanics: Punctuate sentences using periods (kindergarten writing benchmark)

Lesson Plans: A Friend Is... In a response to literature, students will work on capitalization and punctuation. Make a Book about Friendship The children work together to make a class book about friends. Each child writes one page of the book, A Friend Is. Morning Letter/Syllables and Punctuation The class starts the day with a morning letter. The content of the morning letter is areas of study, special events of the day, and/or special procedures we will follow. After reading the letter (practicing our decoding skills) and discussing the content of the letter, particular language arts skills are highlighted.

Resources: The Sentence Song: This song teaches the basics about writing a sentence. Read the lyrics and listen to a clip of the song. What's at the Sentence End? This resources provides a tactile way for students to understand periods. You will have to register at Crayola.com, but it is free. Suggestions for English Language Learners: (E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding) (E/B) Say a sentence and have student repeat the sentence and clap where the period should go. (D) Have student copy a sentence that is missing a period and place the period in the right place. (D) Retell individually or with a partner. (D) Listen to a book or tape of a story which has a simple, predictable pattern. (D) Supply missing words when story is read aloud. (E) Respond orally to questions. (E) Tell if a pattern is correct or incorrect by substituting a word or phrase choice.
