ESL Ideas          (B=Beginning; I=Intermediate; T=Transitional)
(B, I, T)
Students read newspaper articles, advertising slogans, joke and riddle books.
(I, T) Students read short literary works and identify the author’s purpose. The students then can write sample paragraphs to describe and persuade. Other students can be asked to identify the purpose after the paragraphs are read to them.
(T)
Students write a narrative, descriptive, expository or persuasive sample on common themes. e.g. violence in schools, school uniform policies. Students put their work on the classroom bulletin board after completion.
