ESL Ideas (B=Beginning, I=Intermediate,
T=Transitional)
(B, I)
Students participate in pre-reading
activities with native language peers before reading written materials.
Teachers may locate print and non-print resources (dictionaries,
stories, and pictures) in students’ first language to assist in concept
clarification.
(B, I) Students draw a picture of an event or describe a
character in a story the class is assigned to read.
(I, T) Students keep a personal reading log and write reactions
to written material they have read. The reactions can be in English or
in their first language.
(T) Students prepare a paired dialogue from a story and perform
it for the class. The performance can be videotaped and reviewed in
private.
