ESL Ideas
(B=Beginning, I=Intermediate, T=Transitional)
(B, I) Students use a dictionary and a thesaurus to find synonyms
and antonyms of common words. Students begin with simple adjectives such
as “large/big” and “large/small” and progress into more complicated
ones.
(I, T) Students create original words from lists of affixes,
suffixes, and bases. They compare their “new” words to actual English
words by looking them up in the dictionary. Students might combine
“tele” and “mobile” into “telemobile” which is something that moves by
remote control. See
dictionary.com for quick-reference definitions from a variety of
dictionaries.
