Lesson Plans:
Online
Onion Root Tips - Phases of the Cell Cycle:
In this digital version of the classic microscope lab, students classify
cells from the tip of an onion root into the appropriate phases of the cell
cycle, and then count up the cells found in each phase. These numbers are
used to predict how much time a dividing cell spends in each phase of the
cell cycle. Use in computer lab or
as presentation with class involvement.
Cells,
Socks, and Sex:
A fun, easy way to teach the process of mitosis and meiosis. This will
strengthen vocabulary concepts like homologous pairs, diploid, haploid,
tetrad and many others. This lesson will also clear up concepts like sexual
determination, trisomy and even twining.
Turkeys
in the Cell - The Meiosis Square Dance:
Multi-sensory approach to gamete formation
Fun
Bugs Activity
Compare and contrast sexual and asexual reproduction.
Distinguish between meiosis and mitosis.
Mitosis
This lesson will introduce students to the step-by-step phases of mitosis
in an effort to imprint on the young mind the idea that each cell is highly
organized.
Cell Division and Mitosis
Students will make
a slide of onion root tips and observe different phases of mitosis.
