Grade 6, Science
Std #
7: Describe Earth's biomes.

Lesson Plans:

Biomes in a Box
Students will construct a model of a biome which will illustrate the various biotic and abiotic factors unique to the biome.

Unique Plants of the Biomes
Students will understand that Earth's surface is divided into a number of biomes characterized by unique plants and animals and a distinctive climate.

Biome Investigation
Students will use science process and research skills to investigate the six biomes of the world through the use of visual resources.

Earth's Biomes
Students will interpret information from the given tables to plot line graphs for each land biome's temperature and precipitation throughout a one year period.

Biome Basics
This project involves the creation of a simple, yet effective display of the different biomes found on earth.

Biome: Rainforests
In school and at field-based sites, students investigate the characteristics and history of rainforests.

Biome: Wetlands
In school and at field-based sites, students investigate the characteristics and history of wetlands; the importance of wetlands to the establishment of cooperative living habitats; and the impact of wetlands upon Man's lifestyles, available supplies of selective foods, and his built environments.

Freshwater & Seawater
Students will conduct fieldwork to determine water quality of a freshwater habitat, observe an organism's behavior and adaptations, and answer questions about the differences between habitats with still and flowing water.

Resources:

Habitat: An Overview
This resource covers the different ecosystems on our planet and includes a map of the different habitats found in Missouri and information about habitats in Utah. There are links to eThemes Resources on specific habitats and animal food chains.

Biomes of the World

World Wide Biome Project
This site was designed so students could communicate with other students from around the world.  The purpose of this web site is to provide students a standard method of investigating the biomes in which they live, a way of publishing their scientific findings on the WWW, a site where they can obtain comparative data from other biomes around the world, and a chance to integrate computer skills with ecological sampling skills.
