Lesson Plans

Tracking Local Weather
Students measure temperature, precipitation, wind direction, and wind speed for one week and compare their results to actual weather data.

Weather Log
Students will record sky observations as well as instrument readings for a time period of one week.

Our City’s Temperature
The student will use a thermometer to record temperatures from their homes throughout the city, and then hypothesize reasons for the temperature variations.

Weather Sketchbook
Students will keep a sketchbook of weather observations over an extended period.

School Temperatures
Students will collect and record temperatures throughout the school to compare and contrast the temperatures recorded from various spots throughout the school.

Weather Moods
The student will use the scientific method to determine if and how people’s moods are affected by the weather.

Northwest Weather Watch
This module will allow students to investigate how clouds are formed and the impact of weather on our lives.

Clouds: An Internet Based Lesson Plan
Students will learn about the principles of cloud formation by witnessing a laboratory demonstration and conducting research on the Internet in cooperative learning groups.

Gathering Weather Information
Students use weather data and information found on the Internet to predict weather patterns.

Observing Wind
Students will make a weather vane to measure the wind.

Make a Barometer
Students will make a barometer to measure the air pressure.

Make a Psychrometer
Students will make a psychrometer to measure the amount of relative humidity in the air.

Graphing Rainfall
Students will use Excel to create a graph of rain fall at the school.
