Lesson Plans:
Classifying Matter
This unit is intended to identify properties of objects, and
then to group or categorizes the objects according to those properties.
Fourteen lessons for use on this topic.
A Deeper Shade of Purple
Students
observe that a variety of objects are tints and shades of purple, and
classify the objects in several ways.
Discover the World Around Us
The purpose of this lesson is the teaching of the basic process
skill, observing. It is important students understand how to
observe an object, as this skill will be used throughout their
educational profession.
Sink or Float?
In
this activity students will determine whether various objects sink
or float in water. Whether an object sinks or float in a liquid
depends mainly on two factors: density and buoyancy. However, at
this level, students do not need to explain why objects sink or
float.
Ready, Set, Let’s Dough: It’s a Matter of System
In this
lesson, students will look at a complex system when they create
their own play dough by taking several parts and creating a whole.
This will be a creative and instructive process in helping students
to understand that individual parts may have different properties
than the combined substance.
Backpack Science: Sink or Float
Students will make and confirm predictions if objects will float and
sink. What makes this lesson interesting is making backpacks of
objects students can take home with them to conduct the experiment
at home with their parents.
Properties, Properties
