Grade 1, Science
Std 3: Describe effects of forces on objects, including change of speed, direction, and position.

Lesson Plans:

Motion
In this unit the students will be involved with detecting motion and producing motion. They will be given opportunities to identify where motion exists around them and to describe the various types of motion, and will examine the relationship between force and motion.

Marvelous Magnets
As students experiment with magnets, they will learn what attract means and be able to determine which objects a magnet attracts.

Simple Machines and Technology
Students will learn to understand work and explain the kinds of motion used in doing work.

Motion (Push and Pull)
Students observe and record changes in an object’s position and motion when applying a push or pull.

Physics - Forces and Motion
All students will know that unbalanced forces cause changes in speed and direction

Push and Pull of Objects
Students will experience how an object’s motion can be changed through the action of a push or pull on the object.

Push or Pull
This lesson plans uses the Nebraska quarter to teach the concepts of pushing and pulling. You can substitute any state quarter and tie in math and social studies. The Alabama quarter reverse is found on page 20 of the following PDF link The Greatest Educational Change America Has Ever Seen Lesson Plans 2003.

Pushes and Pulls
Students will recognize different types of movement and causes that may affect that movement. They will learn that pushing and pulling are types of forces.

Mickey’s Magnets
In this lesson, students will study magnetism and its properties, including forces.

Let It Roll!
Students will explore and measure the rate of spherical objects rolling down a ramp.

Making Objects Move
Students will identify ways to make objects move.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B, D, E): Experiment with a magnet and group small objects into two groups (sticks to magnet/doesn't stick to magnet). Using a T-Chart with these headings, have the students tape the items to each list (E): and add labels.
(E/B): Students will use magnets to push toy cars across their desks. They will then draw a picture to show what they have observed; (D, E): ...and will be given magnets of various strengths to push cars across the table, then chart which magnets exerted more force.
(E/B) Students attach two balloons to string and suspend them upside down. They will then choose several materials (wool, fur, hair, etc.) to rub against each balloon and record through pictures what happens; D: ...and will chart which materials attract and repel; (E): ...and will infer why certain materials cause a specific reaction.
