Grade 1, Science
Std 5: Identify parts of the human body, including the head, neck, shoulders, arms, spine, and legs.
  • Recognizing the importance of a balanced diet for healthy bones

  • Discussing the relationship of muscles and bones to locomotion

  • Discussing the relationship of bones to protection of vital organs
    Example:     protection of brain by skull

  • Identifying technology used by scientists to study the human body
    Examples:   X-ray images, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)


Lesson Plans:

Nutrition Education - Plan to Balance
The students will understand how a healthy diet and exercise can increase the likelihood of physical and mental wellness.

My Body, Your Body
Students will be able to judge the value of their bones in the skeletal system, to judge the value of obtaining a variety of foods for a healthy body, and associate that value of the muscles for movement.

”Dem Bones”
Students explore resources about x-rays and bones, then create their own x-ray image

Balloon Brain:  Designing a Helmet
Students can "brain"-storm ideas on how to protect a water balloon.  Discussions about how the skull protects the brain.

Anatomy
The purpose of this lesson is to teach students about the basic structures and functions of the human body and how they relate to personal health.

Q-Tip Skeleton
This lesson will help children learn about the major bones in the body. Students will also learn how bones are put together to form a skeleton. This lesson can be a fun activity to do at Halloween time.

Human Body
Students will identify various human body parts and the functions of these parts within the larger system.

Your Gross and Cool Body
This site from Yucky Kids has lots of interactive activities about body parts and functions.
