Identify components of Earth’s surface, including soil, rocks, and water.

Lesson Plans:

Habitats of the World
Students will understand that the earth supports many habitats each with distinct features, plants and animal population; plants and animals adapt to the conditions of environment. This lesson is easily adapted for first grade

Sampling Rocks
Students will learn about sampling through an investigation of rocks found in the schoolyard.

Layers of the Earth
The purpose of the lesson is to introduce geology in its simplest form and how a rock is formed.  It can also be used the sciences listed above with a few miner changes.

Wonderful Water WebQuest
This webquest allows students to walk through the water cycle process.

Erosion
The following activities will demonstrate to students various types of erosion. The purpose of these activities is to increase students’ awareness to the point where they can make intelligent decisions on proper land use.

Collecting Rocks
Students will acquire background knowledge of rocks, how they are formed, how they are used, and how to collect them.

Prairies
This lesson plan uses the book Prairies to teach about landforms.

Minerals – The Building Blocks of Rocks
Students will acquire an understanding of how rocks are composed of different minerals.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)
 

(E/B): Group real rocks or pictures of rocks by attributes (colors, textures, etc.).
(E/B): Discriminate between two objects based on one attribute, such as weight or texture. Which is heavier, smoother?
(D): Select rocks from a group according to a particular attribute. Tell how the rocks are related and why the others were not selected.
(E): Write sentences describing each of five different rocks and suggesting how each might be used. Let others identify them after reading.
