Grade 2, Science
Std 1: Identify states of matter as solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Describing objects according to physical properties, including hardness, color, and flexibility

  • Describing changes between states of matter

  • Examples:   solid to liquid—melting,
    gas to liquid—condensing,
    liquid to gas—evaporating,
    liquid to solid—freezing

  • Measuring quantities of solids and liquids

Lesson Plans:

WATER MAGIC
Students will observe and experiment with water in three
physical forms.

Melting and Freezing
Students will explore what happens to the amount of different substances as they change from a solid to a liquid or a liquid to solid.

Making "Oobleck"
The students will discuss what they think will happen when mixing specific ingredients to create an unknown substance labeled "Oobleck".

Making Ice Cream!
An ice cream unit which includes a recipe for ice cream in a bag.

What's the Matter?
Students will discover three states of matter through a series of hand-on experiments and activities.

Solid, Liquid and Gaseous States of Matter
This lesson will explain the concepts of matter There is a mini-quiz at the end of the lesson.

The Touch n Feel Box
This lesson is used as an introduction to the study of living
and non-living things through the use of tactile perception or the sense of touch.

The Changing Earth
Students will identify materials as either chemically or physically weathered.

Discover the World Around Us
The purpose of this lesson is the teaching of the basic process skill, observing.  It is important students understand how to observe an object, as this skill will be used throughout their educational profession.

Properties, Properties
Students will describe physical properties of materials and measure, describe and classify materials based on common properties.

Classifying Physical Properties of Matter
The purpose of this lesson is to identify the physical characteristics of matter.

It’s the States of Matter
Students will define matter and describe the states of matter.

Characteristics of Matter
This lesson has experiments that show characteristics of matter.

As a “Matter” of Fact
In this lesson students will define matter, compare characteristics of matter, describe changes in matter, and measure matter.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

E/B: Using pictures, students will label various parts of a picture as solid, liquid or gas; D: ...and will use more complex sentences with details to explain their choices; E: and will use more complex and detailed sentences to explain their choices.
