Grade 2, Science
Std 5:
Identify the relationship of structure to function in plants, including roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.

Lesson Plans:

Plants and Animals
The student will identify and explain the function of plant parts-leaf, flower, roots, and stem.

From Seed to Plant
Students will be able to identify plant parts, where seeds come from and how they grow.

Plant Observation
Students grow seeds from an outdoor area, corn seeds, radish seeds and/or bean seeds in a mini terrarium. Comparision of the root systems, stems, leaves, and flowers of the different plants helps students observe and catagorize plants as well as understand the basic functions of plant parts.

Parts of a Plant
After reading about the parts of a plant, students will be able to identify each part and describe its function.

Plant Systems
In this five lesson unit, students will learn about parts of a plant and their functions, where to plant a seed, and how to make a terrarium.

Plant Growth
Students learn about the parts of a plant and a seed, as they plant seeds and observe and record their growth. This lesson has a technology component.

In Full Bloom
This mini-unit uses Miss Rumphius to teach the parts of a plant.

Resources:

Helping plants grow  Students will use plant’s basic needs to grow a plant online.

Biology of Plants  Discusses the life cycle and parts of plants

Flowers at Enchanted Learning Flower rhymes, crafts, quiz, illustrated plant dictionary, flowers as state symbols, and a flower anatomy printout

Tales from the Hive A cinematographer literally filmed inside a hive and followed bees in flight to capture close-ups of honeybee behavior.

Identifying Parts of a Flower This activity uses real flowers for students to label.

Plants and Our Environment This website has a lot of information about plants. The labeled graphics are good.

Study of Plant Parts This website offers online, interactive activities for the parts of a flower.

(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B): Label pictures of plants found near the school.
(E/B): Cut out and label pictures of plants in various environments.
(E/B): Use a Venn diagram to show similarities and differences between two plants growing in different environments.
(E/B): Complete simple cloze sentences about plants.
(E/B): Respond by pointing.
(E/B): Match visuals.
(E/B): Order visuals in a life cycle sequence.
(E/B): Illustrate the life cycle of a plant such as a dandelion.
(E/B): Students plan, plant, care for and observe a closed terrarium. Students will keep a learning log recording changes with pictures and labels; (D): Students will write a narrative describing changes which occur within the terrarium; (E) ...and will apply their understanding of the water cycle to what is going on in the terrarium.
(D): Match a sentence with visuals.
(D): Match plants with products made from them.
(D): Complete an illustration of a life cycle of a plant.
(D): Retell the stages of a plant.
(D): Draw a mural to show food chains as a part of life cycle.
(D): Provide two similar plants with different amounts of light over one week and describe how the plants are affected.
(D): Compare and contrast plants found in habitats in countries represented by students in the class.
