Grade 3, Science
Std 3: Describe ways energy from the sun is used.
  • Examples: plant growth, light, heat

  •  Identifying fossil fuels as a source of energy

Lesson Plans:

Energy Sources and Use
Student will distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable sources of energy.

Energy Busters
Each student will complete a home energy survey and develop an energy conservation plan for their home.

Solar Energy Experiment
The purpose of the following experiment is to demonstrate that energy from the sun can be collected and stored in many ways.

What Stores Solar Energy Best?
Students will understand that all materials can be categorized as to how they store energy or keep heat from leaking.

Sun or Shade?
Students will use a thermometer to measure the air temperature in several places around the school and then return to the classroom to graph the data. In addition, students will grow 3 plants in different sunlight and record the growth.

In Collecting Solar Energy, Is Bigger Better?
Students will compare the amount of heat stored in different sized solar collectors.

Energy Sources
Students will discuss the importance of different types of energy sources.

Conserving Electric Energy
Students participate in two experiments in which they (1) gain an appreciation for their dependency on electricity and (2) learn how regulating the rate of energy consumption makes the energy source last longer

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B): Collect magazines pictures of equipment, tools, machines and sort according to energy source.
(E/B): Create a timeline of energy sources.
(E/B): Students will examine, and classify objects by energy source. They will make a graphic organizer of this information using pictures and labels; (D): Students will categorize objects into 3 objects into 3 types of energy found at home or school; (E): Students will analyze the school environment and list different types of energy used and hypothesize how school would be affected without them.
(D): Devise a science experiment that utilizes two different energy sources and create an outline of the experiment.
(D): Select and discuss examples of energy sources.
(D): Show and discuss toys powered by different types of energy, such as wind, gas, and electricity.
(D): Conduct and experiment with a partner that involves an activity such as making an electrical circuit. Describe the results to the class.
(E): Conduct research for a paper on energy.
