canyons, sand dunes, and ice caps.

| Lesson Plans:
Physical Geography
Students will begin with a warm-up card game reviewing the
major landforms and definitions. The students will look at examples of
these landforms from around the world. Next, the students will pair up
to create three landforms on cardboard squares using goop (salt dough).
Finally the students will present their landforms to the class and the
teacher will read aloud a short story involving landforms.
Understanding
Volcanoes
Students learn that the surface of the Earth changes; some changes are
due to slow processes (e.g., erosion, weathering), and some changes are
due to rapid processes (e.g., landslides, volcanoes, earthquakes).
Folds
and Faults
Students will learn why and how rock layers are folded and faulted and to learn how
to represent the structures in maps and cross sections.
Landform Dictionary
Describes
physical characteristics of land forms and bodies of water including
mountains, peninsulas, islands, plains, plateaus, valleys, gulfs,
rivers, bays and lakes.
Integrating Literacy Into the Study of the Earth’s Surface
This lesson introduces third- through fifth-grade students to the
bodies of water on the Earth's surface, including ponds, streams,
rivers, lakes, and oceans.
Where Are the Wetlands?
Students will identify one or more types of wetlands.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing,
E=Expanding)
(E/B): Make
a class list of shapes and colors and match with
illustrations.
(E/B): Discriminate between two objects based
on one attribute, such as weight or texture. Which
is heavier, smoother?
(E/B): Draw an object based on an oral
description.
(E/B): Create a list of words to describe
colors, shapes and other attributes such as rough,
smooth, small.
(E/B): Group a collection of rocks by
attributes and describe it to a peer. Show other
groupings.
(D): Select rocks from a group according to a
particular attribute. Tell how the rocks are related
and why the others were not selected.
(D): Describe an object in writing using a
"missing word" sentence and a word bank which may
have words separated in categories.
(E): Write several sentences describing each
of five different rocks and suggesting how each
might be used. Let others identify them after
reading. |
