Std 8: Identify technological advances and other benefits of space exploration.
  • Examples:     laser, pacemaker, dehydrated food, flame-retardant clothing, global positioning system (GPS), satellite imagery, global weather information, diagnostic imagery

  • Listing highlights of space exploration, including satellites, manned moon missions, the unmanned Mars mission, and an inhabited space station

  • Identifying Alabama’s contribution to the space industry


Lesson Plans:

Eyes in the Sky
Students learn that science helps drive technology, as it provides knowledge for better understanding, instruments and techniques.

Why We Explore Space
Students will learn the Importance of Space Exploration.

People and Space
Students will explore space exploration and the use of dehydrated food.

Lift off into space
Students will
Understand the history of the space race and space exploration as a whole.

Space Exploration
This unit of study works well as a team project. It allows students to work in groups of two or three. The students then share what they have learned with each other.

What Is a Satellite?
Students will learn about natural and artificial satellite.

How Satellites See
This project will compare and contrast three NASA satellites.

Track the Meteor Storm Online! 
Students will use the Internet to research and complete a  scavenger hunt which also includes several cross-curricular activities that can be used to extend the lesson.

Hubble Deep Field Academy
Students will participate in the Academy and record answers in the Hubble Log all provided by this site.
