Grade 5,
Science
Std 1: Identify evidence of chemical changes through color, gas
formation, solid formation, and temperature change.
|
|
| Lesson Plans:
Changes of Matter
The students will be able to describe the changes of matter
that occur when chocolate is processed from the bean to the bar.
Changes of State of Matter
The students have been introduced to a unit
involving States of Matter. In order to have a more in depth
understanding of the states of matter, they need to know how matter
changes, and what causes matter to change. In the students' daily lives,
they encounter a variety of matter in the different states. This lesson
will allow them to conceptualize these common occurrences in their daily
lives.
Chemical Changes
The students will compare different types of chemical
changes.
Chemical Change
Students will conduct a variety of experiments to investigate the
changes that occur in matter during a chemical reaction.
A,B,C... ACID, BASE, CHEMICAL REACTION!
Students will demonstrate that evidence of a chemical reaction and
chemical change can sometimes be seen by the production of a gas or a
change of color of a solution.
Chemical Changes
The students in grades 3-8 will be able to explore some properties of
Chemical Changes.
Chemical Reactions with Vinegar
Students will make an active volcano by creating a chemical reaction
between vinegar and baking soda.
Chemical Change and Physical Change
Students will observe the physical changes when two reactants
combine to make a chemical change.
Chemiluminescence – Cool Light
In this activity, students will examine a commercial
chemiluminescent chemical reaction in a lightstick. The light from
such reactions is called cool light, because it is created without
heat.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing,
E=Expanding)
E/B: Students will
investigate the rusting of steel wool and the
burning of a candle. Students will use pictures and
simple sentences to record their findings after a
demonstration. D: Students will utilize the
Scientific Method to observe the changes in the
steel wool and the candle and report in their
science journal; E: ...and will write more
extensively in their journals.
E/B:
Students will observe, sequence and compare details
showing how a solid can change to a liquid and then
to a gas using the sun's heat. Students will
illustrate their findings in sequence; D:
...and will describe what happens in each part of
the sequence; E: ...same activity as the
Developing proficiency level, but using more complex
language.
E/B:
Students will mix iron filings with salt and sand
and use a magnet to separate substances. Students
will show the steps used in the experiment through
labeled pictures; D, E: ...and will write
several sentences about procedure and information
observed in each step.
E/B: Using pictures, students will label
various parts of a picture as solid, liquid or gas;
D: ...and will use more complex sentences
with details to explain their choices; E: and
will use more complex and detailed sentences to
explain their choices. |
