Grade 5, Science
Std 2: Define mass, volume, and density.
  • Identifying the atom as the basic building block of matter

  • Relating temperature changes to particle motion

  • Example: movement of colored dye in hot and cold water

  • Relating density to the sinking or floating of an object in a liquid

Lesson Plans:

Terror in Space
Students will explore the concept of center of mass and experiment with how altering the location of an object's center of mass can affect its motion.

The Structure of Atoms
Students will discuss and investigate the structure and charges of atoms.

Edible Atom
A great lesson to use while teaching atoms and the periodic table

Hot and Cold Colors

Students will
explore the effect of heating and cooling on the dispersal of food coloring in water.

Buoyant Force
Students will construct a graph that illustrates Archimedes’ principle of buoyant force.

Density in Relation to Float and Sink
Students will create a density column from household materials. They will determine why objects will float or sink in relation to density.

Density and Volume
Students will calculate mass, density, and volume of various objects.

Volume
Students learn the concept of volume by determining the amount of sand that is needed to fill a container.

Finding Mass
Students will measure mass of pennies.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

E/B: Student will use scientific process to discover the density and buoyancy of water, corn, oil and corn syrup. Students will fill in a lab sheet (predict, observe, conclude) using labeled pictures and simple sentences; D: Students will fill in a lab sheet (predict, observe, conclude) using complete sentences; E: Students will fill in a lab sheet (predict, observe, conclude) demonstrating and using more complex sentences well supported with details.
E:
After an oral discussion of the concept of an atom, students will draw and label a diagram of an atom.
