Std 2: Identify the sun as Earth’s source of light and heat.
  • Predicting the effect of the sun on living and nonliving things

  • Identifying relationships between light and shadows

  • Predicting the occurrence of shadows

Lesson Plans:

Energy from the Sun
Jobs the Sun Does – An activity for young students

Shadows
Investigate shadows, using literature-based discussion as well as experiences with manipulating shadows.

Modeling Shadows
Demonstrate understanding of shadows by creating a physical model of concepts learned.

Solar Hot Dog Cooker
Students will create a reflective hot dog cooker  from a cardboard box, tin foil, and posterboard

Sun or Shade?
Students will use a thermometer to measure the air temperature in several places around the school and then return to the classroom to graph the data. In addition, students will grow 3 plants in different sunlight and record the growth.

Sunlight Necklaces
Students will create living necklaces to explore the power of sunlight.

Cooler in the Shadows
In this lesson, students will make inferences about the cause of shadows by observing and making their own shadows in the sun.

What Makes Shadows? Observing and Drawing Shadows
Students learn about shadows as they observe and draw the shadow of a classmate. In the extension activity, students observe and discuss shadows changing over time.

A Shadow of Yourself
Students will learn about the sun by measuring your shadow throughout the day.

Shadows
Students will explore objects and their shadows. To use creative writing to describe the discoveries derived from working with light and shadows

Shadows and Shadow Puppets
Students will discuss and observe how shadows are formed and how they change, depending on the position and intensity of the light source.

Casting Shadows Across Literacy and Science
Language arts skills are linked to the learning of science in a literacy-based approach to the study of shadows.

Colored Shadows Site that allows students to created various shadows

Shadows In this activity you will be asked to determine if a shadow can be produced by a particular shape.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B): Make a tissue paper collage of the sun.
(E/B): Create shadow puppets.
(E/B): Show a picture of the sun at this website Sun and then draw their own picture of the sun and label it.
(E/B): In a darkened room, use a flashlight to represent the 'sun' and shine a light on objects and create shadows.
(E/B, D): Match pictures of objects with their shadows.
(E/B, D, E): Place a plant in a dark closet for a few days and have students keep a chart drawing the plant before/after.
(E/B, D, E): Give students a chart (before/after), and label "Grape" on the top of the first column. Have students draw a picture of their grape and then place it in on a paper plate (covered with cheesecloth) outside. Have students check their grapes each day drawing changes on their charts. After 4 days their grapes should have turned into raisins (label "Raisin" on the last column on charts) and can be eaten with sun tea that the class can make as well.
