Std 4:
Identify properties of motion, including change of position and change of speed.

Lesson Plans:

Up, up and away
Students will follow directions to construct a rocket ship out of a balloon; conduct launching experiment and record distances.

Wheel Away
Students will describe the motion of objects; create an object that moves; and describe what happens to an object when it is pushed or pulled.

Balls & Ramps
Students will explore force and motion by working with balls, ramps and wheels

Blow Football
The student will explore how exerting a force on a ball by blowing air on it will start it moving and then when the other student blows on the ball in the opposite direction the ball will move in the opposite way.

Push and Pull of Objects
Students will experience how an object’s motion can be changed through the action of a push or pull on the object.

Push or Pull
This lesson plans uses the Nebraska quarter to teach the concepts of pushing and pulling. You can substitute any state quarter and tie in math and social studies. The Alabama quarter reverse is found on page 20 of the following PDF link The Greatest Educational Change America Has Ever Seen Lesson Plans 2003.

Pushes and Pulls
Students will recognize different types of movement and causes that may affect that movement. They will learn that pushing and pulling are types of forces.

Mickey’s Magnets
In this lesson, students will study magnetism and its properties, including forces.

Let It Roll!
Students will explore and measure the rate of spherical objects rolling down a ramp.

Making Objects Move
Students will identify ways to make objects move.

Resources:

How Things Move  Animation of how various objects move.

Pushes and Pulls Students will interact with toy race cars to determine their motion and speed

Science Clips Online interactive science games and quizzes for K-5

I Know that  Students can link to engaging science resources (similar to BrainPop.com in which some activities are offered free)

Push and Pull
This site offers a list of fiction and nonfiction books and activities to use when teaching about motion.

Forces: Push and Pull This site offers lesson plans for older elementary students. However, the site offers a lot of background information about forces.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

(E/B): Explore movement of real-life objects by following commands (i.e. "Roll the ball.").
(E/B): Follow movement of real-life objects by following multiple step directions (i.e. "The car goes backwards then forwards.")
(E/B): Tell the child to show you how to.....i.e. ride a bike, pull a wagon, etc.
(D): Compare movement of objects based on oral statements by pointing to pictures or objects (i.e. "Which goes fastest, bikes, buses, or airplanes?").
(D): Looking at a picture of someone using a form of transportation ask, "Is (Ana) riding a bike or pulling a wagon?"
(E): Predict movement of objects by pointing to pictures or demonstration based on oral statements (i.e. "Show what happens when you let go of balloons.").
(E): Looking at a picture of someone using a form of transportation ask, "What is (Juan) doing? What can you do? Show and tell me."
