HS, Biology
Std 9-1:   Identify the structure and role of viruses and of organisms in the kingdoms Eubacteria, Archaebacteria, Protista, and Fungi.
• Identifying ways in which organisms from the Monera, Protista, and Fungi kingdoms are beneficial and harmful (Examples: beneficial—decomposers, harmful—diseases)
• Justifying the grouping of viruses in a category separate from living things

Lesson Plans:

Where Can We Find Bacteria?
Students will determine what kind of environmental conditions influence bacterial growth

Bacteria Most Wanted Poster
Students will research one bacterial pathogen and produce a "Wanted Poster."

Petri-fied of Bacteria
This lesson allows students to examine the existence of bacteria all around them and to consider the roles, both positive and negative, that bacteria play. Over a period of several days, students conduct an experiment in which they predict, determine, carefully log, and evaluate bacteria samples taken from the school environment.

Protist Lab - Microscope Investigation
Students will examine protists under the microscope, see examples of different protist types, and compare modes of locomotion.

Yeast Lab
Students will determine the best conditions to grow yeast.

Yeast and Balloons
Experiment with amounts of water and sugar to see how to get quick results with this project!

Spore Print Lab
Students will identify the parts of a mushroom, observe the spores released from different types of mushrooms, and understand the way fungi reproduce.

Water Molds
To learn about a group of fungus-like organisms; the Oomycetes, by baiting them from natural sources (water and soil) and observing them.
