9-12, Environmental Science
Std 2.1:
  • Identify by-products of the combustion of fossil fuels, including particulates, mercury, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon dioxide.
  • Identify chemical equations associated with the combustion of fossil fuels.

Lesson Plans:

Is The Earth Warming?
A test of the effect of increased carbon dioxide on the thermal properties of air.

The purpose of this demonstration/experiment is to show the environmental and economic effects of increased carbon dioxide (CO2) content in the atmosphere.

Dead Zone: Why are the waters dying?
Students examine the sources and causes of nitrogen pollution and how it affects coastal zones.

How Many Automobiles?
Students use motor vehicle registration data to calculate the fuel consumption and the amount of carbon dioxide generated by the vehicles in their state.

Greenhouse Gas Lab
Students fill one flask with carbon dioxide given off from an Alka-Seltzer tablet and fill another flask with air. They insert thermometers into each flask and place the flasks in front of a heat source. The students observe the change in temperatures in each flask until the temperatures levels off. They graph their measurements and compare the results from the two flasks. The students then compare their results with the rest of the class.
