Art as Communication

Focus of Unit:
Students create media (visual symbols) for communication with non-speaking students.

Rationale:

q       To demonstrate to students that there is more than one form of communication.

q       The symbols used in art are also used for building a word base for non-speaking students. 
 

Standards:T 

q       Use appropriate media, techniques, or processes to solve visual arts problems to communicate ideas.

q       Select and produce visual images for various people to communicate ideas and thoughts. 

q       Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences.

q       Demonstrate the use of critical thinking skills
 

Learning Activities:

q       Use and cite appropriate resources to locate other symbol systems used for communication.

q       Collaboratively decide on format of presentation

q       Brainstorm and create graphic organizer  (Inspiration) of presentation

q       Collect or create appropriate graphics

 

Performance Tasks:

q       Create a usable web page containing symbols for non-speaking students.

q       Create a presentation to explain their collaborative process used to design the symbol system.  The presentation may take the form of computer presentation, video or other approved format. 

 

Learning Environment:

q       Use appropriate cooperative learning strategies to create groups and assign responsibilities within those groups.

q       Secure the use of media center, computer labs, digital cameras, data projects, scanners, and other available resources.

q       Monitor student progress.
