Building a Butterfly Garden
TEACHERS:
Mrs Charlene McGarrity, Clark Magnet School & Ms. Gail Walton, Adams Middle
School
FOCUS:
Math 7 -- End of Quarter Geometry Unit
RATIONALE:
This lesson is important to the students because they are combining skills
of geometry, finding area and perimeter of different geometric shapes,
using measurement and cost analysis skills and technology to build a
butterfly garden as a school beautification project.
STANDARDS
CURRICULUM:
-
Select and use the most appropriate mode of calculation in any given
situation.
-
Use
estimation techniques in real-life problem solving
-
Demonstrate proficiency in solving consumer-related problems.
-
Use
problem-solving strategies effectively.
-
Develop spatial sense by constructing and
drawing two- and three-dimensional
scale model
-
Solve real-life measurement problems.
-
Exhibit proficiency in determining perimeter and area of regular plane
geometric figures
-
Determine measurement
indirectly from similar figures and scale drawings.
-
Use computers and
graphing calculators to facilitate understanding of coordinate
geometric and other mathematical
concepts.
TECHNOLOGY:
-
Apply productivity/multimedia tools and peripherals to support personal
productivity,
group collaboration, communication, and learning throughout the
curriculum
-
Follow procedures to design, develop, publish, and present products using
technology resources
that demonstrate and communicate curriculum concepts to audiences inside
and
outside the classroom
-
Apply content-specific tools, software, and simulations to support
learning and
research.
-
Communicate regarding technology using developmentally appropriate and
accurate
terminology.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
The
students will:
-
Choose a shape of their garden plot and calculate the area and perimeter
of their selected shape.
-
Research types of plants butterflies like and need to flourish.
-
Research cost of plants selected, mulch, and fencing or border for the
garden at two stores and do a cost analysis comparing the two totals.
-
Draw, design, insert rows and figure the number of plants needed per
square foot.
-
Develop a
Power Point presentation describing their plan for the garden.
-
Present the production to the class.
-
Reflect on the work and select the best idea
-
Finally build the garden as a class
