Mathematics, Social Studies and Technology Unit

Submitted by: Edgar Wilcher and Maryam Hasan Mobile County Public School System

Focus of Unit
Middle school Social Studies and Mathematics:  Ancient Greece’s contributions to modern culture and using strategies of estimation, problem solving and data analysis in a real world context.

Rationale
Students will study the history of Ancient Greece including the Olympic games.  They will use information collected from historical games to develop a mini Olympic game that can be performed in the classroom.  This unit is interdisciplinary in order to give students an opportunity to see the connectedness of the subject matter they study.  Students will be able to use prior knowledge of research techniques and mathematical skills to research and develop their games.  They will focus on integrating number and operations, estimation, measurement, algebra and data analysis skills in the presentation of their mathematical product.

Standards:

            Curriculum:  Social Studies

·        Students will analyze a cultural contribution of classical Greece.

Curriculum:   Mathematics

·    Students will use alternative representations of rational numbers (model, graph, grid…)

·        Students will demonstrate proficiency using estimation techniques.

·        Students will determine and apply appropriate units of measure.

·        Students will apply proportional reasoning.

·        Students will interpret data using given and collected data.

Curriculum:  Technology

·        Productivity:  Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, preparing publications and producing other creative works.

·        Communications:  Students cite electronic sources properly.

·        Research:  Students use technology to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of resources.

Learning Activities

Social Studies:

1.      Students complete a research report on the Olympic Games.

2.   Research the climate conditions of Greece.

Math:

1.   Students develop a mini version of an Olympic game that can be played in the classroom.

2.      Students find the top five gold medal winning countries for the last five Olympics.

Performance Tasks:

Social Studies

1.  Provide a history of the Olympic Games

2.  Tell what events occurred at the Olympic Games.

3.      Tell how climate affects the way of life in Greece.

Mathematics:  Task one

1.  Define rules of the game or event. (How is the game played?)

2.      Using two units of measure (one metric, one standard), determine estimated and actual results.

3.      Present results in graphical form.

4.      What can you conclude about the accuracy of your estimates and measurements?(at least one paragraph)

Task two

1.   Determine the percentage of gold medals won by each of the five countries.

2.      Present results in graphical form.

3.      What aspects of the ancient Olympic Games do you see exhibited by the gold medal winning countries? (at least one paragraph)

Learning Environment:
Students will work cooperatively in heterogeneous groups of three or four in order to facilitate accomplishing the tasks.  Students will initially spend half the period in direct instruction and half the period completing the tasks.  As students develop skills and research techniques, less direct instruction will be needed.  Students will be able to work on the tasks in both Social Studies and mathematics classes.
