Spiders

Focus of Unit: Spiders

Rationale:
Spiders are viewed as villains and pests in children’s literature and movies, but they play an important role in the ecosystem.  Students will investigate how spiders affect the environment.
 

Standards:

         Curriculum:

·         Alabama Course of Study #24 Identify factors that affect the environment

·         Alabama Course of Study #25 Identify the effects of biotic (living) components on ecosystems.

        Technology & Productivity:

·         Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.

·         Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology, enhanced models, preparing publications, and producing other creative works.

        Technology & Communication:

·         Students use technology to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of sources.

·         Students use technology tools to process data and report results.

·         Students evaluate and select new information from a variety of sources.

·         Students evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.

·         Students use technology resources for solving problems in the real world.

 

Learning Activities:

·         Activity 1: Use and cite appropriate resources to locate information about spiders.

·         Activity 2: Collaboratively decide on format of presentation.

·         Activity 3: Brainstorm and create graphic organizer (i.e. Inspiration software) of presentation.

·         Activity 4: Collect or create appropriate graphics, using available technology (digital camera, scanner, drawing software, etc).

·         Activity 5: Create presentation using available technology.

·         Activity 6: View “Spiders” power point.

 

Performance Task:   
Students will create a presentation to explain their answer to the question, “What effect do spiders have on the environment?” Their presentation will take the form of a PowerPoint presentation.

Learning Environment:

  1. Use appropriate cooperative learning strategies to create groups and assign responsibilities within those groups.

  2. Secure the use of media center, computer labs, digital cameras, scanners, data projectors, and other available resources.

  3. Monitor student progress.

  4. Students work in groups in the media center, computer lab, and classroom.

 

Resources:

Passive Resources: encyclopedia, videos, trade books, magazines & journals

Dynamic Resources: curriculum support software, Internet sites

Tool Software: graphics, music & sound, video, multimedia, Inspiration

Peripherals: printer, scanner, digital camera
