The Water Cycle

Participants: Laniese Howard, Kristina Kallhoff, Paula O’Hearn, Ella Smith

Focus Of Unit: Thematic unit on the Study of the water cycle

Rationale:
The students will use the Water Cycle as the basis for learning information about where water comes from, how it is used, and where it can be found.  The students will engage in various activities that will enhance these learning experiences such as experiments, art activities, and the use of various forms of technology.

Standards:

       Curriculum: Third Grade Standards

                            Science: Standards 1,3,4,10, and 33

                            Technology: Standards 11,12,14,18, and 19

Learning Activities/Performance Tasks:

·         Students will create a model of the water cycle in the form of a mobile.

·         Students will research ways that we use water and present findings to classmates and others.

·         Students will visit selected sites that will present information relevant to their project.

·         Students will engage in Q&A sessions with guest speakers who will provide information relevant to their project. i.e. Geologist.

·         Students will create a terrarium as a class project in order to demonstrate the water cycle processes.

Technology:

        Productivity:

·         Students will use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. 

·         Students will use productivity tools to collect and record information gathered and present this information to others.

        Communications:

·         Students will use a variety media and technology tools to help them communicate their findings creatively and effectively .   

                                                                  

Research, Problem Solving, & Decision Making Tools:

·        The class will create a terrarium and use it throughout the project to demonstrate the water cycle.

·        Students will research ways that we use water and present
findings to classmates and others.

·        Students will visit selected sites that will present information relevant to their project.

·         Students will engage in Q&A sessions with guest speakers who will provide information relevant to their project. i.e. Geologist.

·        Students will create a model of the water cycle in the form of a mobile. 

Learning Environment:

             Initial Lesson: Whole group, teacher as facilitator.  Power point presentation         

                                       used as introduction to the project. 

 

             During Project: Whole group instruction for Art and Science projects. Whole

                                        group may also be necessary for video presentations, field trips, 

                                        and read alouds of topic related books. Some small group 

                                        activities to gather and present data.

 

             Conclusion of Project: Students may present their findings as individuals or

                                                    small groups.  A whole group wrap up of the project will

                                                    follow.

 

Assessment and Evaluation:

                          Students will be assessed through the final project.

                          Assessment will be in the form of a rubric at the end of the project
