How does Weather Affect You?

Focus of Unit: Science

Rationale:
Children need to recognize the importance of weather and how it affects their daily lives.

Standards:

  • ACOS #21 Relate events in daily life to aspects of weather patterns.

  • ACOS #1 Identify questions that can be answered through scientific           investigations.

  • ACOS #4 Use appropriate skills to conduct a scientific investigation.

  • ACOS #7 Use mathematics in scientific inquiry.

 

Technology:

·         Students use technology to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of sources.

·         Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.

·         Students employ technology in the development of strategies for solving problems in the real world.

 

Learning Activities/Performance Tasks:

·         Students will participate in a Read Aloud of selected weather books. Students will then create original weather illustrations.

·         Students will participate in independent selection and reading of weather books.

·         Students will utilize Kidspiration to create a word web associated with weather. (requires Kidspiration or Inspiration software)

·         Students will access the internet through selected links to identify current weather conditions.

·         Students will record daily weather data utilizing Kidspiration. (requires Kidspiration or Inspiration software)

·         Students will graph monthly weather data in the form of a chart.

·         Students will participate in an experiment to create a cloud.

·         Students will sort different types of clothing/accessories relating their appropriateness to the existing weather conditions utilizing Kidspiration.

 

Assessment/Evaluation:

Student activities will be assessed utilizing a rubric.

Teacher observation of student work will be used.
