Grade 1, Writing
Benchmark C: Participate in daily writing activities (COS 17, 24)- modeled, shared, and independent writing

Examples: journals (personal/content area), letter writing, writing center, word processing, daily news, interactive writing, text innovations, book making

Lesson Plans:

Alphabetizing With Original Stories
This lesson challenges students to write original stories using alphabetical order. For students who are still developing a basic understanding of alphabetization, the entire class can write one story, beginning each page with a new letter.

Family Message Journals
Use family message journals as tools for learning, thinking, and self-expression. Students write messages about school activities and recall, think about, and articulate what they have learned; they connect new information to the known; and express their own thoughts and feelings about topics.

The Mail Race
Students write friendly letters, mail them to random schools, and wait to see who responds.  This lesson combines language arts and geography.

Persuasive Writing: What Can Writing in Family Message Journals Do For Students
Composing messages with varied purposes helps children discover the power of writing. When students recognize what writing can do for them, motivation to write increases. This lesson engages children in using writing to their families as a persuasive tool to get what they want and need.

Junie B. Jones Introduces Literacy Mystery Boxes
This read-aloud lesson, using Junie B., First Grader (at last!) by Barbara Park, invites students to discuss the story with their classmates, record key events, make personal connections, and create literacy mystery boxes to aid in retelling the story.

Have Journal...Will Travel: Promoting Family Involvement in Literacy
This project is designed to engage families in shared literacy activities. The students take turns taking home a book bag that includes a stuffed toy, a book, art supplies, a topic to discuss with their families, and a journal to share their thoughts and ideas. Through the experience they build positive memories of literacy activities.

Teaching Audience Through Interactive Writing
One of the most difficult aspects of writing is keeping audience in mind throughout the writing process. This lesson supports first-grade students in learning about audience. Through interactive writing, students work together to create a genuine invitation letter for a group of their peers.
