Benchmark H: Begin to use appropriate writing conventions
(COS 18-20/ SAT 10)
  1. Use correct directionality
  2. Space words appropriately
  3. Capitalize the pronoun I, proper nouns, and the first word of sentences
  4. Punctuate sentences using periods and question marks
  5. Use conventional spelling for grade-appropriate words
  6. Use knowledge of sounds and letters to phonetically write advanced words
  7. Use appropriate grammar (nouns, verbs, subject-verb agreement with simple subject)

Classroom Newspaper
This lesson plan helps students learn about sentence writing and using writing mechanics that enhance and clarify understanding.  There are many other language arts objectives covered in this lesson.


Sentence Quest
This multi-session activity uses students’ speaking vocabularies to help them learn about complete sentences.

Action!
This is a game designed to help students recognize and demonstrate action words.

Capitalization and Washington, D.C.
In this unit, students learn and practice capitalizing names of cities, states, countries, streets, buildings, bridges, and geographical places around the theme of Washington, D.C.

Word Study With Henry and Mudge
This lesson  uses a model that incorporates different reading stages and research-based strategies for teaching reading to provide direct instruction for the past tense marker –ed. Students also practice real reading and writing using books from the Henry and Mudge series.

Frank Oo Berry Mush
Frank Oo Berry Mush- provides students practice in writing, incorporating reasons to support ideas and responding constructively to other's comments.

You Flattened Me
Students draw self-portraits to make themselves flat, then e-mail themselves, along with a letter, to a participating person.

Stationery: Spice up your writing program with these cool handwriting templates

Spell Check: This online spelling game has players identify the incorrect word and then use the correct spelling to rewrite it.

SpellARoo: Choose a difficulty level and then identify which word is misspelled.

Nouns: Read a poem about nouns and have students create their own noun poems. 

Go For Gold Grammar: This page has many fun practice quizzes for first through fifth grade.
