Book Buddy Biographies: Intermediate and Primary Students Working
Together
The success of a year-long Book Buddy program hinges on those first
few days at the beginning of the year. As students are first
introduced, they have the opportunity to get to know each other on a
more personal level by creating personalized biographies.
Completing the Circle: The Craft of Circular Plot Structure
After exploring the organizing structure and
writer’s craft of picture books, students identify, explore and apply
the elements of circle plot structures to their own stories. Students
use graphic organizers, read and write stories, and use checklists to
assess their work.
Writing Workshop: Helping Writers Choose and Focus on a Topic
This lesson, conducted in a workshop format,
helps young writers bring greater focus to their writing. Students use
a timeline to break a larger topic into several events or moments;
then, each student selects an event to write about from the timeline.
All
About Our Town: Using Brochures to Teach Informational Writing
In this lesson, students in grades 2–4 practice
information gathering by exploring their town or city through
interviews, photographs, and websites. They then write and revise
paragraphs about their town and collaborate to create a visitor's
brochure aimed at students who are new to the area.
Honey I
Shrunk The Story
In this lesson, students use critical thinking
to decide which story components are important to include in a
summary.
Whooo's
In The Nest
During a weeklong writing workshop, students
illustrate a family of owls and write about their owl family. Students
draft a five sentence expository writing essay, revise in peer editing
groups, and publish their work.
