Martin Luther King Jr. And Me: Identifying With A Hero
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day provides a great opportunity to teach about heroes. But how do we help our youngest students identify with an American hero like Martin Luther King, Jr., a man who lived and died long before they were even born? This lesson provides lots of ideas by encouraging students to explore the connections between Dr. King and themselves in journals and inquiry-based research.

Curious George Is Curious About Our Town
The following activity uses this familiar character to help first and second graders learn about other places as they visit the Curious George Is Curious About North America web site.

E.T. Write Home
After reading The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System, the students will pretend they're E.T. writing letters home describing his adventures through the solar system in a journal format.

Teaching About Story Structure Using Fairy Tales
In this lesson students read a variety of stories and then apply them using storyboards and a writing exercise. Students progress from shared writing to guided writing; independent writing is also encouraged.
