Dr. Seuss's Sound Words: Playing with Phonics
Boom! Br-r-ring! Cluck! Moo!—Everywhere you turn, you're bound to find
exciting sounds. Whether you visit online sites that play sounds or
take a sound hike at school, a near-by park, or on a field trip, ask
your students to notice the sounds they hear then write their own
book, using sound words, based on Dr. Seuss's
Mr. Brown Can MOO! Can You?
As Slippery as an Eel: An Ocean Unit on Simile and Metaphor
Using the figurative language students have identified in fiction
and nonfiction ocean book readings as a model, students revise their
own work to add simile and metaphor. The students are then invited
to write new pieces that include figurative language as part of a
class book.
Learning Through The Duke
In a series of three short lessons, your students will learn about the
important contributions made by Duke Ellington to the field of jazz,
as well as some of the factors that led to his involvement in the
field. Your students will craft an original poem using these words and
expressions.
Autumn Similes
Students create descriptive autumn similes
and write them on fall themed paper. Lesson can be used as a whole
group activity in lower grades.
Snow
Similes
Understanding how poets use words to paint pictures is a concept that
can be taught to young students. The key is to start with an easy
simile that is very visual. The combination of a big snowstorm and
hands-on materials make this lesson successful. This ESL lesson plan
that can be adapted for lower grades.
