Benchmark H: Edit writing for conventions (COS 21, 23, 27-29/ SAT 10)
  1. Capitalize proper nouns, the first word of sentences and quotations, and necessary parts of a letter
  2. Punctuate using periods, question marks, exclamation marks, apostrophes with contractions and possessives, commas  (items in a series, cities and states, compound sentences), and quotation marks with dialogue
  3. Use conventional spelling for grade-appropriate words
  4. Use knowledge of sounds and letters to phonetically write advanced words
  5. Use appropriate grammar (parts of speech, subject-verb agreement with simple subject, appropriate tenses- present, past, and future, and special usage problems such as double negatives.
  6. Use correct abbreviations
  7. Use correct sentence structure (edit awkward construction, fragments,
    run-ons)

Lesson Plans:

Quotations
Students will learn how conversation is indicated in writing. They will use the dialogue in a comic strip and convert it to written conversation using quotation marks. They will then compose a written conversation with a partner. After editing the conversation, the students will rewrite the conversation on construction paper, adding macaroni noodles for quotation marks.


Sentence Fragments
Strategies for and practice with identifying complete sentences and fixing the most common sentence problems.

Walk the Walk Charades
In this variation of charades, a player walks in the style of an adverb so that teammates can guess the adverb.

Proofreading Makes Perfect
This online activity has lessons on capitalization and punctuation, spelling and usage. Correct the sentences and then check the answers.

Spelling Counts!
Students create and solve codes based on the numerical values of their spelling list words.

Yo! Conventions
After reviewing the trait of conventions through a teacher directed activity, students perform their stories to show that to make their ideas clear, good use of conventions is a must.
